Frequent confusion in the workplace. The work environment was unnecessarily stressful due to poor communication between departments and capricious changes in direction from upper management. Sample volume in context of the laboratory's production capacity did not justify the rushed pace of workflow. Staff often went without lunch breaks due to under-staffing and poor distribution of training. Holidays were not observed because upper-management did not want an increase in turn-around-time for the few samples that arrived; this was also the rational for requesting production staff come in during extreme weather events and hazardous road conditions. Interpersonal conflict was rarely escalated to management or HR. Some difficult employees were let go after their pattern of poor behavior was known and documented; however, staff favored by management had all criticism of them ignored. This resulted in the perpetuation of a hostile work environment by management-favored staff against those who complained, specifically by denigrating their targets in private conversations to weaken job security and jeopardize possible promotions. Cliques were common, people frequently talked behind each other's back. HR has an unconscionably weak definition of what constitutes severe or pervasive sexual harassment. Of the incidences I know of, including one that I witnessed, the perpetrators remained employed while those who filed complaints were either terminated or quit. The company likes to boast about the diversity of their workforce and the number of women they've promoted and placed in leadership positions; this is hypocritical considering the gravity of their failures toward those who were brave enough to report their experiences of sexual harassment knowing the risk, and ultimately the cost, they incurred.
