After 13 years of stellar performance, I was brutally laid off

Pros

Up until I was laid off, it was the the best job of my 40 year career. The technology is great and they are doing very interesting things. Most of the rank and file engineers are very smart and great to work with.

Cons

The company was just split into the medical ("Life Sciences') and electronics ("Electronics Measurement Group"). The Life Sciences company will keep the Agilent name and who knows what the Electronics Company will be called. I was a master level level electronics engineer who's contributions were in almost all of the microwave and RF products. The "HP" way is so dead and gone.

Used to be a great culture but has turned into a bully culture.

Pros

Lots of smart people to work with.

Cons

Work-life balance issues really depend on how your immediate manager or their manager views the topic, for example, can you work from home or are you expected to be in the office. You can be held responsible to be in the office during the day but on calls early in the morning and late at night, again, depends on the work group. Pay is supposed to be among the best, but check it out because the pay is inclusive of a bonus that only is paid out if the company is doing well. You could find a better salary elsewhere. If you are hired in at a high wage, it may be years before you get an increase.

Pros

Smart people. You will have a lot of opportunities to learn technical stuffs.

Cons

Poor management from top to bottom. Too many managers after layoffs. A lot of super long-term employees, 25-35 years with the company, who only talk instead of doing anything. Management focus on books, not employee development. Pay is really low for mid-age engineers. Again, too many people has been working here for more than 25 years, and a lot of them were ex-managers, so the only thing they do is networking with each other. Not productive in project management. A new product introduction cycle is 2+ years. Market and sales staff doesn't under the products. They sell products because the products have good data sheet.
