Pros

Good people, management freedom at local level

Cons

There is a huge disconnect between senior leadership and the field due to middle management involvement. Upper management believes they understand what's going on, but rarely have a real pulse on the true health of the organization. They try, however middle managers will not give an honest assessment of what is happening in the field, and will pressure their direct reports to do the same when given the opportunity. This existed in Airgas before the Airgas/Air Liquide merge, however it has only gotten worse in the past five years. Managers and talent are quitting in droves; losing decades of talent and knowledge. There used to be a promote from within philosophy much of which has been abandoned for favoritism and nepotism. Work-life balance is emphasized without addressing the root causes of a pervasive "do more with less" culture that has existed in the industry for nearly 30 years.

Pros

pay, benefits, people you would deliver to and co workers were cool. hours were great.

Cons

They would not hire staff to grow business, the sales staff are short staffed beyond capacity, customers are bailing due to billing errors all the time, you feel like you have a guillotine over your head all the time. If you do something wrong they will can you regardless of if they need you or not. They answer to USA management and thus there is no autonomy. You have to sign a contract that will effectively make you liable if you do something stupid thus enabling them to fire you. Be very careful if you do work there.

Pros

The people. The people are great. Decent Benefits. Airgas isn't know for how well it pays it's people, but overall compensation is fair.

Cons

Like I said, the people are great until you start getting into Management. Upper management is too concerned with covering their butts (or kissing the right ones) to care/listen about/to their employees. One Area VP in particular doesn't know crap about management and rules by imitating those below him. The rotating presidents was a joke. The longest tenured of the 3 was by far the worst; but at least he didn't care. The next one, cared, but he didn't understand what he was doing. I think that's actually a much scarier combination. The current Pres. is pretty good; but like the culture dictates, if you're not "in", then your out (and will be treated accordingly.)
