Pros

Lots of smart people from MIT and other great places; a very unique product; a clear market leader; a great customer base - you provide a valuable service for most of the major web sites.

Cons

Not that much innovation going on at the moment. Akamai is largely selling whatever was developed years ago. If you are not in the main Cambridge office, it is hard to get things done. Some good people have left for this reason.

Pros

The people, world-class engineers, the technology... Incredibly challenging. The breadth of technology you work with is impressive. You don't get to do this sort of thing anywhere else in the world. You get to deal with top-notch customers. You get to do things that no one has done before at a scale that no one has attempted before. The career growth opportunities are pretty good.

Cons

Staggering lack of communication, lack of discipline, architecture support is weak, tactical management is mediocre, though strategic management is pretty good, much, much emphasis placed on (short-term) financial performance of the company as opposed to long-term investment and growth. Not much emphasis on professional development and training. They don't want to spend the money. Much lip-service paid, but little results.

Pros

Great product, good people, good opp. It's fun to work for a market leader, and it's not just the technology but the people that make it such- that's a tag line with other companies but with akamai it's true.

Cons

workload, lack of information sharing across the company, lack of communication between mgmt and staff. One of the growing pains experienced is that, when things in the past were handled by a single group, there are now several organizations that split the responsibilities. This results in some confusion, but more importantly the communication methods don't exist between the groups. Also, the way that mgmt chooses to- or not to- communicate changes to the organization is frustrating- I know that mgmt doesn't have a lack of respect towards the staff, but the way they sometimes handle how they let the staff know of changes belies that.
