Pros
You get to work in a good environment with things you actually like. I am passionate about my department and really love the customers I have been able to get to know on a regular basis. The store sells high end things. It's nice to be able to get most anything I want there, even if it is a bit spendy. Most department managers are good with their people and are willing to work with your needs. Industry discounts make up a big part of the reason a lot of people work there.
Cons
Really low pay for the area, about $3-4/hr less than the average. They cut hours hard during the slow season. I am supposed to be a full time (35-40/hrs a week) employee and during January - mid March I get 20 on a good week. There used to be a really nice in store employee discount that was taken away without any notice by management. When asked about it, the GM said "well, no employees buy things here anyway, so it's not a big deal." The owner is a micromanager, and not very nice to his employees unless they're on his "good side." The favorites game is played by higher management a lot because of this. The buyers for the company are in the other store, so they struggle to bring in products that are relevant to the area we are in versus the other store, so we have a lot of merchandise that sits for a while, goes on clearance and then gets bought again when it sells at a loss. High turnover for employees because of specific managers not treating them well.
