Pros

1. Some truly top notch individuals work here who are passionate about what they do and helping others. 2. The company could do great things and be an excellent place to work IF it took advantage of the talent it has on board.

Cons

1. Overvaluing Sales – too much focus and recognition on the top sales leaders. Lavish all expenses paid trips (non-COVID times) for those who bring in the most sales revenue. Who do you think RETAINS the clients after they are in the door?! 2. Ineffective Business Operations & operational inefficiency – very disorganized environment lacking the technology platforms that fit the needs of the organization. ARCH Is a joke. It is clunky and challenging to find information within it. This SharePoint platform does not have all the capabilities required, so in lieu of scrapping the portal and finding a more robust platform, it’s piecemealed together (e.g. using marketing cloud) adding confusion to an already non-user friendly ARCH portal. Cut the losses and find or build a tool that is better suited for the purpose. 3. Only focusing on acquiring new firms when current firms are suffering. Growth at the expense of the core foundation breaking down is detrimental to the culture. 4. AleraEdge needs to be disbanded or sold. It lacks excellence in all areas and is an embarrassment to offer clients, yet it is pushed and the solution we are required to use. Alera is not a TPA nor should they compete with a TPA. The latter spends hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars on technology and ensuring top notch outcomes. AleraEdge is light years behind in what other vendors offer for the same price. 5. The Leadership Team is divorced from the daily realities going on underneath them. Individuals have been PUT on the leadership team who did not EARN nor deserve the position. Was the position posted internally for others to apply?? How can someone with no management training/education and less than 2 years of work experience managing employees be qualified to lead a department successfully?! The leadership team is disconnected from what employees really feel about their managers and the company.

Pros

Benefits, partnership with parent company Alera Group

Cons

Burnt out staff, poor management, no HR department - only a part-time bookkeeper, and lack of diversity. The staff is all White, only 2 males otherwise all Female and a very exclusive unit. You’re either in or out. Gained valuable knowledge in the health and insurance benefits industry, but this was not my favorite field.

Thank you for the opportunity to allow us to Listen Generously to your feedback, reviews allow fellow job seekers to identify how and if JA Counter aligns with their values as a potential workplace. As an organization that values ‘expecting more from ourselves than we do from others’, feedback gives us the opportunity to look inside and evaluate – what a gift! I’d like to address the pros and cons to add clarification and context for reviewers to consider and I would welcome the opportunity to further discuss the feedback offline. • Benefits – I agree! Our benefits are numerous and way beyond insurance – from a results only work environment (ROWE) where people are encouraged to work in a way that’s meaningful to them as long as the outcomes are achieved to a robust mental health program and everything in between. Thank you for pointing this out. • Partnership with parent company Alera Group – thanks so much for noting this connection. For some context & clarification for job seekers, Alera Group was formed through the action of 24 pioneering, independent agencies who knew that we could be stronger together (we were one of them!). This aggregator created a unique structure where we get the best of both worlds – a local, independent spirit and decision-making with the backing, partnership and collaboration of a national organization. • Burnt out staff – workload and capacity are two things we are constantly working to improve, as a growing & cyclical business (with high-volume times of year – similar to accountants at tax time), we measure this twice/year via an all-colleague engagement survey and put intentional actions into place to improve. We are a work hard, play hard group and will continue to prioritize and value our colleagues – supporting a healthy work-life integration and empowering balance through encouragement and autonomy. • Poor management – I’m sincerely sorry that your experience with me was something you’d rate as poor. As someone who is constantly striving to improve myself, I appreciate the feedback! I’d love to have an offline conversation about anything specific that drove this rating. • No HR department – for clarification, we do have a large HR department, this is the team that drives a unified on-boarding experience, The Collaborative Way facilitation experience and more! • Lack of diversity – at JA Counter, Alera Group we value diversity in all things. Although we are a business of primarily women (in a male dominated industry) we find that each individual on our team is unique and brings a diverse perspective to the team and value each colleague. Our Inclusion & Diversity initiatives are intentional, purposeful and align with the values of everyone in our organization. • Very exclusive unit – I’d love more feedback on this, we strive to support our team in making personal and professional connections with each other. • Horizontal vs. vertical structure – we agree, a horizontal work style is more cohesive and inclusive! As we continue to grow, we will evaluate the art & science of accessibility, availability and effectiveness of our two, formal-leaders serving our team as direct “managers” and will add team-leadership structures to make sure all colleagues feel supported and have access when they need it to the support they need. Thank you for the opportunity to reflect and address your feedback. I’d sincerely welcome an offline discussion to learn more so we can continue to inspire excellence and success in all we do. Kindest regards, Kristi
