A Trojan Horse of a Job

Pros

Mentally Stimulating and you grow a ton. Tolerable if you have a good team and manager. TRAUMA BONDED BESTIES.

Cons

AlphaSights is a company that has great potential to be a great environment for their employees. The people are amazing to work with at the associate level and even sometimes at the manager and VP level, however, upper management does not take the mental, emotional, and physical health of their employees in mind at all. There are set business hours that you are required to adhere to, however at AlphaSights you are on call 24/7. Get comfortable with the idea of working 12+ hour days and weekends. Oh and you don’t get paid for it you are just expected to do it. There is no overtime pay whatsoever just the constant threat that you will lose your job. The salary is $75,000 your first year and is non-negotiable. This is not enough money to support yourself in either of their location in the US and although there is a bonus that you can work towards employees continuously say that achieving this bonus is MOSTLY out of their control. The attrition rate(Rate that people leave) is extremely high, 75%, a start class that began not even six months ago that started with 28 people is now down to 7. The constant changes in company policies creates an unstable environment where employees are expected to produce hyper growth in the company and themselves. This causes severe mental health issues in the employees and a culture that will ultimately cause everyone to want to leave the company. Despite being expected to take feedback constantly any feedback that is given by the employees to management is not taken seriously at all. Upper management has said things such as, “Being understaffed is a mindset” and “work hard so we can at least fight for you”. The company culture and managements attitude will just continue to get worse if there are not changes made to company policy and management best practices.

Pros

-pay is decent -most people are very smart, friendly, and driven -associates are given a lot of responsibility early on in their careers -chance to gain skills in project management, market research, sales, organization, negotiation

Cons

-extremely unfulfilling job -success is solely measured based on your numbers and you are constantly reminded of where you stand compared to your peers; you have a monthly quota that you are expected to hit and you are reprimanded if you do not reach it even just one month -does not support employee career goals or curiosity to transfer roles within the company -the leadership team is corrupt and chooses favorites -when associates voice concerns, they are ignored -bonuses are awarded unfairly and each book of business has very different pipelines -micro management to the max with many touchpoints with your team throughout the day to check on what you have done and what you you have left to do

Pros

was good back in 2017

Cons

A race to the bottom and a mass exodus. When I started, AlphaSights was a great company with a start-up vibe, positive culture, and strong goals. Now, it is a full boy’s club that is throwing any consideration for its people out of the window in hopes to save its business. As an Associate, your day is filled with redundant tasks and you are basically a glorified call center rep. At least, associates have uncapped pay (though targets are getting harder and harder). As a manager, unless you help your team with their day-to-day tasks, it is a babysitting job. Managers “audit” their associates (aka micromanage) and gossip about them all day. I work hard to take work off my associates’ plates and look around and no managers are doing that. I mean, why should they as their pay is capped and high-performing associates actually make less as they become managers? Anyone who is a promising manager serves better getting a higher-paying job elsewhere. It is a babysitting job as the talent gets worse and worse. The recruiting team is well-intentioned but they care a whole lot more about quantity over quality. Unqualified candidates pass each recruiting round (“thanks for the flag but let’s give them one more chance”) and get hired every quarter. Managers don’t get a full say (VPs do) but managers are the ones facing the consequences. These shifts are going from bad to terrible under their leadership. At first a good idea, AlphaSights’ only internal promotions turned out to be a detriment. You have leadership who ONLY knows AlphaSights and couldn’t give you a comparison of what else was out there if they tried. Vice Presidents and SVPs are the biggest culprits here. Then you get the token woman who makes C-Suite who of course had to be an external hire because all C-Suite was white men until she came along— now it’s just white people. Then we get the CFO who joined without any announcement, probably due to his IPO experience and the not so secret plans there. Hire diversity, AlphaSights. Your decade-long “efforts” are pathetic. It’s a race to the bottom as 90% of their employees are miserable, the firm is hiring worse and worse talent, advisors lie about their experience to get more consultations, and leadership blocks out any feedback from associates/managers. You tell your VP that people are unhappy, he ignores you, and 95% of Associates have “open to work” on LinkedIn and will leave as soon as they can. I can’t wait for leadership to look around in 2023 and have no one left. Also all of AlphaSights’ “new products” are straight up replications of GLG or Tegus— get a bit creative, will you? You were once great, AlphaSights. Now, it’s a joke.
