Pros

A few smart people, lots of great products being built

Cons

A lot of not-so-smart people, working in multiple cross-functional teams who will not move fast enough to help you. Amazon has a lot of space for poor performers, who stick on and become tenured employees. The rigour placed in the interviewing process is absent in reviews.

Pros

Working at Amazon was a fantastic opportunity to learn from some of the best software engineers in the world. The breadth of problems tackled at Amazon is staggering, and I felt that the work I was doing really mattered. Management was fair and reasonable and the overall culture was friendly, if competitive.

Cons

It is very hard to maintain a good work-life balance. There is very little opportunity for flexible employment, and the nature of the business often requires working at abnormal hours.
