Pros

Great autonomy - if you want to jump into a big project, you can often go ahead. There isn't a lot of bureaucracy. If you have a good idea and can prove its value, you can work on it. Cool embedded startup culture embodied in 'its always day one'.

Cons

You are at the mercy of your org. Work experience can be highly variable from department to department. If your director or VP is a jerk, your department can suffer greatly. Sometimes getting people to do stuff feels like herding cats.

Pros

Freedom to invent whatever may make money so long as the customer's experience is only ever bettered in the process

Cons

You must justify (working backwards) every idea with extensive data before it will be considered for resourcing
