Pros

Apparently a good brand name to have on your resume In general people are nice and have good pedigree Group leaders are, in general, very nice and do understand employee's issues including concerns around career progression and salaries Somewhat fun culture. Very good company to work for if you are a second earner and want to coast.

Cons

Below (read way below) average salaries and benefits Medical benefits are extremely bad Hard to get promoted - only way is to post for a new position in the group or outside, which is open to everyone to post for. Just doing your job very well does't lead to progression in salary or title. Very employee-band concious, which level VP can talk to which level VP etc. Very heirachical, it takes a long time to make a decision- even VP level employees have little power

Pros

- virtual positions are plentiful - depending on department/leader you have the freedom to do your job - ok salary, ok benefits - supports work/life balance

Cons

- too much work, not enough people - everything is a priority - very siloed and complex company structure. a lot of duplication of efforts - some business units are very myopic

Pros

Allow employees to work from home when needed. Allow employees to leave work early for medical appointments when needed. They are very flexible with this.

Cons

If you don't fit in with the cult like culture it will be very difficult to get promoted no matter how hard you work. Many of the programs are incredibly dated and are not used by other companies, so it is very hard to pass on your technical skills from Amex to the next company. If you join Amex, make sure the kool-aid is to your liking and you plan on staying forever.
