Pros

American Express has a good work life balance program. It is very helpful if you have children.

Cons

The company doesn't understand the impact of outsourcing the knowledge of their business. There are very few SME in technologies due to the outsourcing. How dumb is that. ?

Pros

The company cares about employees - extra effort is expended keeping employees informed about changes, celebrating successes, challenging everyone and rewarding excellence. Allows flexible hours, work from home that supports work-life balance. Good opportunities for advancement within my department.

Cons

Directors are super individual contributors, not organizational managers. As such, there are gaps/overlap in departmental and interdepartmental roles and responsibilities. This causes problems for others lower in the organization to address/resolve on an individual basis rather than organizationally. Workload can be extreme for high-contributors.

Pros

There is little overtime and the work is not stressful. The benefits are better than other companies in Phoenix, with a good deal of vacation and sick time granted. Time off is encouraged as is work at home. Total compensation (e.g. base pay + bonus + benefits) is exceptional considering the low hours and stress.

Cons

As a highly driven individual, I'm often concerned that we have become soft at the expense of Shareholder interest, and am often in a frustrated state as a result. The work is sparse and not challenging, but more importantly the Technologies organization as a whole is not the high performing organization it used to be. The portion of our time we put into keeping our current level of staff is quite large. In addition to the constant justification of the importance of our jobs, common in any organization, we undertake work with questionable value-add because we have the time to do so. This is a recent development, occuring only in the last five years or so, and could change with these tough economic times.
