Pros

Good people working there, great campus and benefits. Company is transitioning from small company mentality to large company mentality.

Cons

As they transition from small company to large company mentality, there are definitely some bumps in the road. Uncertain if past actions and/or management behaviors can truly be changed to succeed as they desire

Pros

Semi-flexible schedule, ability to work from home when needed, paid continuing education, tuition reimbursement, room for advancement, ever changing work environment, interesting business (specialty insurance), great corporate culture, more paid holidays off than banks, Licensed Nurse Practitioner on site (saves trips to the doctor when you aren't feeling well), great workout facility, company seems to care about its employees, company is big about giving back to the community. I've been with American Mod for more than 10 years and never have I stayed in the same position for more than 2 years at a time. If you like change, as I do, this is the place to work. The company is consistently growing and changing, and usually in a good direction. American Modern is backed (owned) by one of the biggest insurance companies in the world, Munich Re, and having that financial backing has allowed the company to grow and expand in ways we couldn't when we were a publicly traded, family owned company.

Cons

Upper management isn't great about listening to the employees who are in the trenches and doing the work. When they make up their mind on something, they seem to blindly move forward with it, even if the workers are telling them it doesn't work. While this isn't always the case, it has happened enough for me to realize it is an issue. That said, however, I don't blame the upper management so much as I blame the middle management, which frankly, there is too much of. Not all, but it seems that many of the middle managers are reluctant to pass suggestions from their employees up the line as they fear upper management will think their team is not performing as it should. Also, there seems to be a competitive nature between managers of various departments, which can be healthy at times, but I feel it also works to sweep some of the larger issues under the rug and keep them from the eyes of the upper management. Lastly, in an effort to constantly push forward, the company has a bad history of implementing new technologies before they are ready. Knowingly flawed software will be put into use leaving the employees to figure out work arounds to make things work so the business can keep functioning. While I applaud the company for constantly trying to keep up with technological advancements, I think we would benefit greatly from slowing down implementation in favor of getting things right the first time, rather than rolling out new software that is flawed and then trying to patch it as we go along. If we took the time to get it right the first time, it would save the company in the long run having to constantly bring in IT consultants to fix issues we knew were going to crop up.
