Pros

I found that across the board my colleagues were the highest quality people I've ever worked with, the work was important, the volunteers passionate and there was a feel-good aspect to knowing I was part of a vital service.

Cons

In short, management and HR are incompetent and constantly turn over. People are promoted based on longevity and politics rather than merit and ability. Education and intelligence are disregarded rather than valued. It is common for managers to be verbally abusive - I will never forget the weekly, day-long meetings for which management planned nothing but kept employees captive for 8 hours. They would bluster, threaten, cajole, insult, abuse, argue, swear at, stomp around and pontificate to employees. Most employees either lost their temper, threatened to quit or cried at work at one time or another. All of the staff at every level were openly frustrated and sarcastic, and appropriately so. It was the most dysfunctional, abusive work environment I've ever encountered and ruined what could have otherwise been the most rewarding job imaginable.

Pros

Everyone knows the Red Cross and I was proud to be able to work each day towards the incredible mission of helping people "prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters" both big and small. I've never had a boss who worked so hard and with so much passion and I've worked for several non-profits. Leadership constantly gave me opportunities to learn, grow and shine; I'm so thankful for that. And, at the Red Cross, employees have the opportunity to develop TWO careers - their daily work and their role during a disaster.

Cons

National leadership struggles following each major disaster (9/11, Katrina, etc.). That and our inability to adequately explain to the public what we do creates the opportunity for us to regularly come under scrutiny - sometimes deserved, but mostly not. Too much paperwork and hoops to jump through - lighten it up so we can deliver more services. Reduce unnecessary costs so funds go further withOUT eliminating so many people. The rest of us become exhausted.

Pros

Good pay, great benefits, and an emphasis on work-life balance. Positive and caring atmosphere. Very rewarding.

Cons

Restructing/layoffs have created training difficulties & increased workload on current employees. Economy adds additional pressure. Company is fairly management heavy.
