Low pay, low raises. It is as if Ameritas’ work environment is stuck in the 60’s or 70’s with old school principles. While I worked there, I did so may other depts job, it left me grossly overworked. There is no clear line where your position starts and ends because they will have employees do other departments jobs on top of your own. They just keep adding with no raise in pay, no recognition so your position is boundless. You may get yelled at by employees in your own area, other areas, management or even HR with no repercussions for their inappropriate behavior. I was yelled at multiple times and no one did anything to remedy it. PTO isn’t much, they aren’t understanding if you need time off for medical or family emergencies. I will tell you, do not plan on having much unplanned time at all. Literally next to nothing before you are placed on an action plan if you’re sick, even if you need to go to a doctor appointment. It doesn’t matter because they lack empathy. You may be harassed by other employees and even management if you upset one of them. Then they all go talk to each then they may even begin teaming up on you to try to get you to quit. I’ve seen it happen a few times with people actually quitting because it didn’t stop coming from multiple directions. I can only equate it to passive aggressiveness like teenage high school girls leaving it difficult for you to prove what’s happening. Now, many people have been there for a really long time so they are close, set it their ways, resistant to change and some have been there so long, it’s the only job they’ve ever had. The downfall to this is that they have no idea what it’s like at other organizations so they aren’t able to bring any type of diverse work experience to their position, almost like they’re stuck in a retro work environment. All of this creates a toxic work environment. You will not be respected at all at first so be aware of that. Huge lack of training & support. Systems are very outdated and so are their training programs. People may get upset for you asking questions as well, figure it out yourself type of place with lack of resources to get the information. Lack of advancement opportunities. Wait for someone to retire. They a very short staffed but also don’t have enough higher positions because they don’t want to pay for those positions. So you will constantly do work for at least one, if not two positions higher than yourself. It seems like management has a superiority complex and will talk down to you, make you work harder, belittle you, gaslight you, bully you along with their friends and may break you down so much that you cry. I’ve seen the strongest people just crumble. If you attempt to get help, be aware that a lot of people know each other and will talk to one another. Your manager may be friends with the HR manager or an HR rep. This place is absolutely horrible. The work place I’ve worked for. You don’t realize how bad the place actually was until you work for a company that actually treats you well, then you will appreciate that next employer so much more. Insurance is not great either. They help their friends, significant others and relatives first. I can’t elaborate on this one. Ergonomics are horrible. It’s like working with desks and chairs from the 90’s or older. I’m not joking. They cut corners everywhere possible, including ensuring employees are working safely and properly for their own physical health. There were 3 people I knew that had issues because of ergonomics specifically. Just suck up, say yes, do what ur told, don’t complain and assimilate. Be ready to hear gossip, insults, yelling and berating.
