Pros

Amgen is a young company with a strong pipeline. It wants to be more innovative. One of the last true biotechs out there.

Cons

There really is no ethnic diversity here at Amgen. Efforts to change and build a sustainable pipeline of diversity is limited if at all. In general, succession planning is ambiguous at best. It is difficult to understand the appropriate path to senior management positions past a Sr. Manager. To that point, there are several qualified and over qualified employees that are frustrated on this point.

Pros

Amgen has a culture of cultivating people, although it's becoming more market-focused and losing some of that good feeling it used to have. Overall Amgen treats its employees very well.

Cons

Amgen is large enough that there are stupid HR rules around promotions, the ability to get an "Excellent" review, and this really hurts. The best employees can't always be recognized, promoted, and so forth because of a silly rule like "employees must be in their job at least 18 months before being promoted."

Pros

The company provides employees with great benefits. The headquarters is world class and located in a beautiful setting. Great cafeterias. Nice people. The truth is highly valued.

Cons

Poor stock performance, very political culture, few opportunities for advancement, incompetent management, the compensation and promotion system feels gamed. Good people are not recognized. If you are not ex-Navy or ex-Merck, you have a job, not a career. Good luck getting people to listen to your ideas. Many people feel they have never worked so hard for so little praise, advancement and compensation in their careers.
