Non stress environment, decent benefits , decent pay, friendly environment

Cons

Managers and supervisors are not qualified for jobs because of Amtraks hiring from within policys. Basically u can go from cleaning a train to supervising a team of experienced craftspeople like electricians, plumbers and so on in 2 years. Education is not valued , if you are too smart they will push you out the door. Management lacks basic skills as they are all ex cleaners with no education or management experience . It can be a very physical job at times including working in all types of weather. Your shift changes regularly for first few years. This review is based on the NY facilities.

Visionary leadership is bringing Amtrak into the 21st Century. Incredible institutional knowledge and dedicated employees. Great benefits, live-work balance for management employees. A focus on project management skills is improving the company's ability to delivery capital projects.

Cons

While recent management changes have made improvements, it's still hard to get anything done quickly at Amtrak. Institutional bureaucracy, red tape, federal regulations, and company culture impede change.
