Pros

Good pay and benefits. Strong retirement.

Cons

A broken government agency. No opportunity for advancement. Too much diversity hiring and not enough merit hiring at all levels of the company. Zero accountability for management. Too many veteran Amtrak employees stuck in their ways.

Pros

Great, supportive co-workers; they become a second family. Great benefits, including rail privileges and pension plan. Opportunities for advancement are increasing, especially since more and more people are retiring.

Cons

Not a very dynamic organization; there are many "old timers" who are stuck in old ways. As a "quasi-government" organization, funding is not always a given. Also, unions are too powerful here.

Pros

Life work balance. It is a place where there are many opportunities to learn new skills and have responsibility if you show effort and competency. You can get out what you put in.

Cons

Little downside to poor performance so employees that don't do their job or try to make things better are not impacted. This can be frustrating for the many employees that do care and try to improve.
