Pros

-Exposure to many laboratory techniques and instruments with very little experience required. -Working with specimens from various animal species was interesting. -Night shift schedule worked well with attending school during the day. -Can easily stand apart from your coworkers with a decent work ethic and desire to learn.

Cons

-Because very little experience is required, you are often trained by people with limited knowledge. -Observed a lot of questionable lab practices. Not regulated in the same ways that human diagnostic labs or pharmaceutical companies are expected to be. -The longer I worked there the more I worried I was limiting my career growth if I wanted to move to more regulated companies. -Night shifts and weekends required. -Pay rate much lower than similar jobs at other labs

Pros

Great benefits and HR is quick and efficient when you email them. Also, the hiring bonus at 3 months and 6 months,

Cons

As a Specimen Processor you are on production to hit a certain percentage, which I think is horrible. If all samples have to be processed by 6:30am why would there be a production rate? To monitor adults as if we are kids. Also, you are told when you can break and have to wait 6 hours just to take a lunch with ONLY two 10 minute breaks. They will complain if you are a minute later. Then snitch to the supervisor! Some leads are given positions because they’ve spent their youth years working there for a decade and have now developed an attitude. You have workers who move at a very slow pace and you have to help them do their work because you can’t leave until they finish. Let’s not mention the chores. You have to work ten times harder than other departments who get paid more, talk on the phone and take a million breaks. Can’t move to another department also while on a written warning. Honestly, this job is for high schoolers.

- Toxic work environment from management down including: Talking down to employees, swearing at employees, racist language, and bullying from both management and other employees -Blatant and obvious favoritism from management - Micromanagement from leads - inconsistency of expectation - No ability for growth -Unstable schedule - Will routinely not process samples the same day they come in because "they want the person who left the sample to do it" - Unsafe workplace with wax and formalin on the floor, PPE is not consistently available, Biohazard materials not cleaned off saws and surfaces for weeks at a time -Hands-on training is not done - Management admits to not knowing the department and jobs within
