Upper management listened too much to Wall Street, putting too much money in unconventionals, and now it's paying the price. Not many upward mobility opportunities for women or minorities, basically a white male dominated company. Offer more training for experienced employees, not only for new hires.

Apache, along with other companies I assume, began hiring a number of engineers, technicians, project services, etc. around 2011 from either outside the oilfield or with little experience in the position being filled. On paper this was a good idea and could have brought in a lot of great talent and innovation. However, with a lack of training and shoeboxed programs most people struggled. An anti-intellectual mentality formed among the more experienced employees to separate themselves from the new talent and discredit programs and ideas (i.e. "we've always done it this way", "how much money will that waste." etc.). This caused somewhat of a split in culture with one side conservative traditional oilfield and the other progressive exploration. Those who were talented enough to get another job did and the workforce started shifting to an anti-technology, very conservative group. When oil prices tanked and layoffs began the first to go were the newer employees. Because the remaining employees shunned the new programs, this left a knowledge gap in data-basing, SCADA, VFD, HSSE, etc. Reporting and operations performance have been suffering since then. Apache has culled their employ base of technology programs, placed A-type male personalities in all segments of management, and promoted an aggressive posture among the work force in order to survive the industry downturn.
