Pros

Beautiful location at Santa Barbara. Product is kinda interesting.

Cons

- Very bad WLB. Non-stop meetings start from 8am and could last past 7pm. Almost no breaks in between, no times for breakfast, lunch, and sometimes dinner. A few days in a quarter, one needs to work till 2-3 am in the morning. - The pay is meager compared to the work load.

I'm disappointed to hear that you're experiencing a poor work-life-balance. While it's common for employees to work outside of standard business hours on an as-needed basis, it's our hope that this is not the norm. I encourage you to talk to your Leader or HR Business partner, and have an honest discussion about your workload and prioritization.

Pros

Company does try to focus their annual vision and goals based on what’s happening in the market and therefore, many of the projects are high profile and impactful features. Team members are nice to work with. Managers and leadership are really good at political speak so that it doesn’t feel political but it really actually is. This is probably more of a con.

Cons

The compensation and benefits have a lot of caveats that you might not know about until you have to use it. 1. You don’t accrue any PTO while on any kind of leave. 2. Your annual raise (which is effective in March for everyone else) is effective only upon your return from leave. This inequality makes those who go on parental or bereavement leave or sabbaticals further feel like they are being penalized for having a life outside of work, which is against their culture for promoting great work-life balance. So they may give you “generous” 100% paid 18 weeks of parental leave but if your leave happens to be through March, you’re technically not 100% paid since your raise doesn’t come into effect until you return. 3. Your bonus is also prorated to only the days you’re an “active” employee and is only effective upon return. 4. During the interview process, don’t believe the recruiter when they say this role is eligible for any potential RSUs. More than likely you will get none or only 50% of what they say the role is eligible for.

Thank you for taking the time to tell others about your experience at AppFolio. We strive to create an equitable workplace for all employees, including our approach to PTO and LOA. Our policies are fairly standard, aligned with peer companies. Pay while on LOA is based on a lookback of prior earnings vs. any planned upcoming pay adjustments. Regardless, it sounds like this information was not clearly communicated to you, and we're sorry this was your experience. We always want to communicate our benefits with clarity and consistency, and will keep working to do better.
