Channel retail (formerly field sales/channel sales) is a shell of an org from what it was. It used to be run by Steve cano - who now works for Levi Jeans. Current leadership has managed to destroy the culture, personality, and more than likely long term growth of the program. The line level sales people in channel were pillars of their locations, trusted advisors to partner management and paid well enough that looking for another job made no sense. The current setup is a conveyor belt of hapless new hires who are more inept than the last, due in part to the decrease in hiring standards. Associates used to be paid commission for driving revenue in stores, this went away because leadership couldn’t figure out how to build a proper compensation plan. For a company that has a 30% margin, and the highest ASP in their class skipping out on your soul, the people is an insane move.
They used to allow RMs to manage their region with ultimate flexibility, as they understood their markets better than anyone. This autonomy went away, to be managed by 1%ers who don’t understand the avg person that they serve. Everyone who joins, is looking for a way out, unless they’re so far deep (stock, grandfathered pay etc) that they just accept they’re going down with the ship. The brain drain that has occurred doesn’t even allow Halfway decent people to move up, because THERE IS NO PROMOTION OPPORTUNITY. Leads don’t exist, RMs are hired from external or brought over from retail (out of their depth) as opposed to people who have worked for years to build the channel they want to lead. As channel retail has become more visible to the larger corporate org, the worse it’s gotten. We used to have yearly sales conferences where we train, and engage with our colleagues. There was always something you could take away from these meetings. Sure it costs money, but again, you’re talking about the most profitable company on the planet. We competed with every other consumer brand that had a presence in these partner locations, grew the Mac share M/M - Y/Y, put the ecosystem together for customers in a tangible way, and drove services, which is glue to the whole thing.
If anything I’m disappointed in channel retail. An agile group of innovative sales people, that turned into an administratively bloated, top heavy soulless rotation of sub par sales experiences.
