A speculative career choice
Pros
It's a great place to use as a stepping stone if you don't have any experience. Middle management is empathetic. Co-workers are easy to get along with. R&D has a game room, donut/bagel Wednesdays, and the occasional R&D outing. HR is responsive and earnest. Plenty of opportunities to take on responsibilities. Parent company Vista has an interest in seeing Aptean succeed. There are multiple efforts underway to improve processes and tools within Aptean. New emphasis has been placed on supporting new development. Aptean has the potential to be a great company to work for in a year or two.
Cons
Salary is on the low end. Combining several dozen products under one roof in a short period of time has its unique problems. The transition from waterfall to agile development is a source of consternation. High turnover has left new hires to pick up the pieces of important projects. Career growth for developers is as of yet undefined. Upper management is learning a lot of things by trial and error. Parent company Vista can do with Aptean whatever they please. Aptean has the potential to be an awful company to work for in one or two years.
