Pros

Working on a college campus, flexible hours, fun environment, lots of exposure to different levels of management. Often the controller is also responsible for IT systems and works as a partner with marketing to create and sell meal plans. Three distinct business cycles per year (fall, spring, summer) that bring about different paces and challenges keep the job fresh and exciting.

Cons

Field finance organization loosely structured, sometimes conflicts arise when financial people report to operators who are not familiar with GAAP and accounting practices. Lots of financial pressure to grow sales and EBIT while reducing costs. Can be a stressful job, often cuts are made at the administrative level. Higher education industry as a whole has taken a beating in recent years due to rise in online and commuter students.
