Worst experience with HR

Pros

I enjoyed working in higher education. My supervisor is an advocate and I enjoyed working with him.

Cons

They could care less about your happiness or career growth, so long as your position fits within their career architecture. My position was "demoted" without any explanation or input from my supervisor, which changed the min required years of experience for my position from 7 to 5 and lowers the salary range. How they can do that 4 years into the job without my boss' approval or input is beyond me. I've recieved great evaluations and have been recommended for promotion but this seems punitive. Regardless of the fact that their own staff manual states staff cannot be demoted, this word remains on my record.

Rewarding work, some caveats

Pros

Can be very rewarding to support scientific advancement/research projects. Great to work with and interact with students, who bring enthusiasm and positive energy to your day-to-day. Atmosphere is very diverse, and you get to work with students, faculty, and staff from all different backgrounds. Solid benefits and great tuition remission for employees and dependents.

Cons

Support and training for sponsored grant or contract-contingent staff varies widely by department or unit. Some do not offer enough. Faculty serving as supervisors to non-academic staff members can often have unreasonable expectations, and mentoring/direction can be lacking. Pay is not great and annual salary raises are very minimal--even for very high performers.
