Pros

the flexibility was great. Company announced an office mandate for 2024. Terrible announcement, seemingly not based on data at all. People can be good here but not because of what the company has trained.

Cons

Average pay, below average benefits (no RRSP or match), above-average “expectations”. Senior leader team not aligned and not high performing. As a result are punishing everyone in Vancouver area by forcing back to office to resuscitate the company. COO still trying to push bureaucratic “operating system” but most managers still unaware of what is required of them.

Our ultimate goal as an organization is to win in the marketplace. Every benefit that we offer to Particles, including workplace flexibility, has to be balanced against our ability to achieve that goal. We understand that flexibility is important to Particles, and we have retained some level of flexibility in the new policy, but ultimately the success of our organization has to come first. OS2, or the Way Article Operates is ultimately operationalizing the Article Way (our guiding principles) through building specialized businesses within a business, to ensure accountability and authority match while delivering value to customers whether they are internal or external. Introducing any organizational change comes with challenges, and we are learning and progressing together. We recognize how we work is not for everyone, however, combining more in-person interactions and thoughtful systems in place is key to drive high performance.

Pros

Nice people to work with. Opportunities to grow if you can navigate through typical startup chaos.

Cons

Following suit of RTO with no evidence it'd help the company, with clear objections from the whole company including VP level. Completely broke trust towards the leadership if there's any left from the layoff. Linkedin posts and software engineer career site still claim itself to be a remote first company. The RTO announcement is poorly written and extremely tone-deaf. The policy is also ridiculous that employees in remote locations get company-sponsored vacations to fly-in every 6 months for 3 days given the company's financials, while local employees need to pay out-of-pocket and must spend up to 3 hours a day commuting. VP of HR wisely ran off before the dumpster fire started. Essentially, there's no trust either way: employees no longer trust the leadership, and the leadership evidently does not trust the people they hire.

We have ambitious goals for the future, and believe that we can only achieve them by working more closely and effectively with each other, as a result, this is why we’ve updated our Work Location Policy. We believe more in-person interactions will have many positive impacts, including greater organizational productivity, improved collaboration, more effective teamwork, and higher levels of trust will help to foster stronger bonds between us all. We also understand that this change can bring challenges to individuals, and their families, which is why it’s going into effect in January to give time to make the adjustments necessary.
