They simply don't care about people, particularly "newbies" (1-2 years). You need to put your goals and do your best, but:
- if they decide to cut people, as a newbie you'd be just sacrificed for the "greater good";
- in this case, you could be mobbed, harassed and pushed to accept their "generous" offer, which is 5 months of salary;
- in case you want to stay, they will start with the "silence treatment" for 2/3 months, then they will call another meeting to tell you that "your are working less, and your colleagues are overworking (false, since you're the one being in the lab all the long managing your own projects and the colleagues one)", pushing you to a sudden meeting with HR because "there's no ground for careeer progression".
so, they don't care about mortgages, families and lifechoice you have made because they have bold ambition. But "Hey, we care about you but we need to think about the company, too".
