Challenging Work Environment with Limited Growth Opportunities

Pros

Remote work. Great benefits and pay.

Cons

The company culture heavily emphasizes personal relationships over merit-based performance. Promotions and project assignments often depend on how well you connect with your manager rather than the quality of your daily work. Leadership openly prioritizes relationships and networking over contributions, which can be discouraging for those focused on delivering results. Innovation feels stifled, as some employees take credit for others’ ideas, and this behavior appears to be tolerated or even encouraged. Trust in management is low due to a lack of transparency and fairness. On my team, opportunities for growth, such as promotions, seem tied to social activities like drinking with managers during offsite events. Those who don’t participate may face exclusion, such as being ignored during team dinners (felt like outsiders) or receiving subtle criticism in front of colleagues. The performance review process lacks credibility. During 1:1 meetings, employees are questioned about who gave them lower ratings, which undermines the anonymity and integrity of the system. Recent layoffs disproportionately affected program managers, yet the company continues to rely heavily on support roles filled by program managers, creating confusion about strategic priorities. Overall, the environment can feel unfair non- inclusive, and demotivating for those who value merit and transparency.

It was amazing, then it tanked.

Pros

I worked at Atlassian for longer than any other employer in my career. At first, the environment was great, really encouraging me to do my best work in areas I was interested in. The engineering org was bottom up and any engineer could affect meaningful change. Not to mention, I was supported in changing roles several times and never got bored. As a parent, the paid for medical premiums were also awesome.

Cons

Once they brought in a new CTO who quickly replaced everyone reporting to him, things went downhill really fast. It was almost as if he was doing everything listed in a book of what not to do. All the efforts to measure productivity have amounted to micro management by middle managers. Individual engineers can no longer bring about meaningful change without playing some of the worst business politics I've ever seen in my career. Not to mention, the CEO(s) are so out of touch with the market. Every all hands with them turned into one collective eye roll from the majority of the employee base.

Pros

Used to be amazing from 2019 - mid 2023. Had a lot of transparency in the company, and yearly review cycles were great to have an insight into performance and goals for the year.

Cons

Changes in mid 2023 made the environment extremely stressful. Company was "flattened" in late 2023, where a lot of teams were reorganized. Review cycles changed so it seems that there's always review or review prep going on.
