Pros

Great sense of community. Rewarding because you're making a difference in the lives of students. Solid benefits, tuition assistance, cultural and athletic events for free.

Cons

Academia is just slower to process things/ paperwork/ changes than the private sector. Can be frustrating to have to wait long periods of time for necessary changes. Also, (unwanted) changes can just "come down from the top" very quickly. Seems to happen more here than in the private sector I previously worked in. The benefits are great, but the pay isn't (in general for staff members.)

Pros

A lot of free time to work autonomously. Pretty much an unlimited budget for design, tools, software, equipment, conferences, trips, etc. I would recommend working here to gain design experience, communications experience, but don't plan to stay here for more than a year unless you want to become a doormat to the spoiled girls in the management team. But if you like social cliques, then you will probably love it here.

Cons

Very top-heavy management, no justification for the number of managers to ratio of employees. Within that top-heavy structure, several managers/ directors were promoted at very early ages, and I don't believe their quality of work can stand alone, nor do I see them as effective leaders. They are quick to delegate large projects, then retreat to their offices with closed doors. Many of them refuse to use the phone, and communicate with people in the office via email. They are very good at looking busy or burdening their calendars with meetings that they blow off anyway.
