I gave them my life and they turned their back on me.

Pros

Great benefits. Nice Christmas bonuses. Good associates to work with.

Cons

Like someone else has already said, watch your back! It seems if you have 20 something years, they are going to look for a way to let you go. They will serve you "warning" letters to back up their actions, but the warnings do not coinside with the reviews you receive annually. If you are not doing the job the way they think you should, why not transfer you to another area? Instead they tell you they can't give you a good recommendation for another department so you are stuck displeasing them, never to win. It's only a matter of time.

Pros

Looks good on your resume to say you worked for fortune 500 company

Cons

At A-O it does not matter how you perform rather, it's how influence peddlers think you perform. No management by objectives at A-O. Without profit centers, budgets and measurements that are objective good people are subjected below par recognition and rewards. A very small middle-aged professional class at A-O. If you are not tapped for an officer level position their is little other path to career fulfillment and a professional level of compensation. Especially tough on people who move to Lansing and only later discover both their economic status and career options are both in deep peril.

Pros

It is stable. You can coast and will always have a job. The pension and retirement plans are adequate. They are flexible with vacation time and within reason, taking "appointment" time and making it up. After 10 years, the Christmas bonus is substantial, and vacation time accrues pretty rapidly. Cafeteria style health benefits are more than adequate.

Cons

Not firing people because of lack of performance, and not tying performance to raises/promotions, fosters a level of apathy. Promotions are based on time at the company, not ability. Raises seem to depend very little on workload performed, overtime put in or extra responsibilities assumed. High performers and low performers are paid very similar wages. There is no real motivating factor to make people work harder. It is more important that you wear a tie and show up between 8:00 and 4:30 than it is that you are competent at your job.
