Solid Company

Business Outlook

Pros

Benefits, low expectations, hours of work, and discounts. Overall the company is great to work for. If you are a hard worker and put in a little extra time you can do very well here. They pay for some continued education and are finally starting to get the message that software developers want to work flexible schedules. IT leadership is improving.

Cons

Compensation for high end software developers, software development process, disconnect between executive business and IT. On the software side, the main problem is they develop elite talents and then let them walk because they are unwilling to open up their pocket books. Like a lot of insurance places, they are insurance places, not software places so this is understandable. They started a promotion process that requires you to get software designations. The problem with that is people put the work in and then leave for higher pay.

Great company, unrealistic expectations

Business Outlook

Pros

No layoffs ever. Strong company values.

Cons

Mediocre salary, overwhelming workload. Plenty of vacation/sick time...just don't take it! 37.5 hr work week is a joke; if you're in mgmt expect to work 60 hrs+. Oh, and if you aren't a "chosen one" by local mgmt, Good luck! getting promoted.

Living in the Past

Recommend

Business Outlook

Pros

Decent benefits. 37 1/2 hour work week (although they seem to expect IT to work overtime quite often with no extra pay). Insurance discount.

Cons

Managers seem to be chosen based on favoritism, not ability. Coworkers are often uncooperative and rude. It's a total boys club! Most people would rather get projects done fast than right, which makes maintaining the code a complete nightmare. System documentation is almost non-existent and training is minimal. That, coupled with a sink or swim mentality, means you're pretty much on your own to figure out everything you need to know. Senior management seems to have serious resentment towards IT.
