Pros

1. In my experience thus far, [Avanade] management cares and is vigilant. 2. Opportunity and vertical/horizontal mobility are abundant; the former due to rapid growth and the latter due to a partiality towards change for the better. 3. Enough training and certification, both internal and external, to develop knowledge for a long time. 4. Individual performance outweighs the success/failure of a project. 5. Smart, driven, and friendly people (Accenture included).

Cons

1. Past a certain career level, it is difficult, if not impossible, to stay technical. All roads eventually lead to a shade of sales (it is a services firm). This perpetuates a two-year average lifetime from the ground-up and external hiring at higher career levels. 2. Plenty of travel, despite regional model. 3. Project availability is highly dependent on who you know, rather than placement resources or even what you know.

Pros

Avanade is a global company so there are lots of opportunities to travel. There are career advancement opportunities. If you get a career manager who has been with the company for a while, they have a lot of clout and can help you advance. Avanade has a ton of clients so each project is different - this is great if you like variety. The pay is generous, as is the $2,000 extended benefits allowance every year to spend on things like gym memberships, travel, commuting costs, hobbies, etc.

Cons

You may have to travel, even if you aren't thrilled about leaving your family. Avanade will probably stop stack ranking employees in 2016, but the process by which employees are stack ranked is very hush-hush and depends a lot on who knows you and your work. Your career manager is essentially your only advocate for career advancement, so you have to be careful what you share with them (i.e. don't tell them you're unhappy in your position, if that's the case).

Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn

Cons

Disguised discrimination against technical minorities, offensive comments made by mid management team in private conversations and even in the open space while on call. Things are never said directly to the person but behind his or her back. Struggling to find projects in Canada, stronger in the USA.
