Pros

Some projects can be very interesting (but tend to be few and far between). Depending on what site you're based at you might find that you are merely resource to do any old task that has nothing to do with your skills. Pay is good. Work-life balance is excellent as the business is very flexible around working hours. It's unusual to see people working lots of overtime these days (but then maybe that's because we've all been burned in the past). The atmosphere in the office is pretty relaxed

Cons

Little in the way of professional development - well, none actually. There are few training courses and little upward mobility. It's a highly political environment and those who play the game best seem to do well. Communication is all top-down. Senior management seem aloof and disinterested in the opinions of engineers. Very much a "them" and "us" tension between the executive population and the rest of us.

Pros

High calibre people Interesting work if you get the right project If you are in the right place and your face fits you can get promoted Above average salaries for experienced hires

Cons

You are expected to do 40 hours chargable work, excluding travel time to cllient site and do further work 'in the margins' to develop the company. The margins get fuller the higher you go so be careful what you wish for! If you are not in the right location it is very difficult to get noticed and promoted. For Cyber this means London or Guildford. So go in at the right level Impersonal and uncaring approach to management (management by spreadhseets) There is an increasing focus on style over substance, which works well for short term engagements, but can result in coming unstuck during longer engagements People are generally only supportive if you already know them; otherwise they can be obstructive and unprofessional (the 'my trainset' mentality)
