Pros

Good benefits. Exposure to cutting edge technology and procedures.

Cons

Always short-staffed. Nurse to patient ratio higher than what you're told when hired and unsafe for high acuity patients. Constantly changing policies & procedures which you are required to keep yourself abreast of. No nurse advocacy, contrary to what they say at Orientation. Inconsistent rule enforcement. Uninvolved management relies on hearsay to form opinions & base their action on, instead of knowing individuals. Throw employees under the bus, even if a difficult patient of family member complains. If you like the feeling of working with "a gun to your head" and inadvertently making a wrong move, then BJH is for you!

Used to be proud to work here, not so much anymore

Pros

Used to take care of its employees, offer generous benefits, and strive to keep safe staffing levels. Upper management had allowed us to take excellent care of patients because we were adequately staffed.

Cons

The CEO takes a million dollar bonus just before a budget crisis, and now BJC has been on a hiring freeze since April. Although that ended, it still takes a considerable amount of time to get a much needed job opening approved. They're overworking their staff, and many are looking to leave due to burnout and low morale.

Pros

Nice facility, large corporation with ability to transfer to other department's. Part of BJC healthcare which is a large non for profit organization.

Cons

No leadership, I currently don't even know who the manager of my department is. People are rewarded based on who their friends are, not how good of an employee they actually are. Nurses are expected to stand there and "smile" while being yelled at by patient's, families, doctors and charge nurses. Ability to transfer but almost always considered a "lateral" move as a nurse. Very small raises, nurse there for over 5 years and base pay has only gone up less than $2 an hour. Health insurance increases mean I make less take home now then I did as a new grad. Poor HR department. I've worked many 12 hour shifts with no lunch and not even a break.
