Pros

Railroad retirement, Union, Seniority, Multiple locations.

Cons

On call 24/7. no schedule. on call for holidays. no weekends. you are nothing but a number to upper management. They treat a dog better than you. They hire you just to try to fire you. You can get in trouble for taking time off to attend funerals, weddings, death in family, court, jury duty, etc. They want you ON CALL 24/7. Possible furlough within the first 8 years with the company. You may have to relocate to find a steady location to work. Better Not Start a Family cause you'll hardly see them. Your kids will grow up without you. You will not be able to attend their sporting events. No home life. Terrible vacation allocation. It takes you two years with the company to get one week of vacation and are penalized to use it.

Pros

The Job isn't bad. Every day is different. More or less work with your conductor and accomplish your tasks without all the corporate bs.

Cons

No time off ever. Work away from home, have starts reset in AFHT. Work out of your home at minimum rest period. You might as well move into the AFHT hotel, because you will see it more than your own home. The pay isnt great. Yard wages don't compete with any other blue collar union jobs. You would make more working for the county. Complete lack of COLA makes the pay scale laughable.

Pros

None. The pay is good for a blue collar job but it hasn't been worth it for quite a while.

Cons

I used to think the BNSF just reviewed emoyees as liabilities instead of the assets there are. And never considered moral at. I have come to realize it is worse than that and they actually view employees as enemies. The job and quality of life get worse on a weekly basis. There is always constant change and always for the worst including management turnover, working rules, quality of life, communication and the tools we need to do your job. My hiring event 10 years ago had almost 300 people for 25 positions. Now they pay signing bonuses and struggle to fill 20 openings. That should tell them something. Sadly it doesn't they seem OK with that. It should tell you something though. Do not work for or do business with this company.
