Pros

Benefits are good and railroad retirement is top tier if you can live long enough to enjoy it. Pay is good as well but the taxes and recently more expensive union dues offset it.

Cons

Company has not back-filled on hiring since COVID. We are severely under staffed and the hiring process takes months but after classes and qualifying for about 2 years, you better pray you have seniority to work where you want. We are years behind on hiring to say the least to get most spots filled. The reward for sticking around is becoming less and less appealing. Also, your on call pretty much 24/7. You get 2 weekends a month but that was recently taken from me too. You have NO LIFE on this job. You make enough to stick around for a while, but never enough to get over the hump.

Pros

The more seniority you get the more job options you have. Good health insurance. Job security in the welding department compared to other jobs. Able to move around if you want inside your district according to seniority. Railroads transport everything so it's a line of work thats steady even during an economic down turn. If your in a craft; you belong to a union and you do have some protection and help if you get into trouble or get hurt. How much help is debatable.

Cons

The rate of pay is not equal to the amount of responsibility you will have in certain positions. There's no reward system for the amount of work you accomplish other than the buddy system. It takes a alot of union force and alot of time to get any kind of raises and meaningful compensation out of the company usually several years. They demoralize their own work force by saying one thing and doing another with the actions they take without realizing it alot of times.

Pros

Five word minimum huh? Let’s see…

Cons

The company literally says you (train crew) make too much money. To be called for a train with up to no advance heads-up. An example. 0001hrs You can be 10th in line for a freight train showing a planned onduty time of 1201. Cool. Plenty of time of sleep and get some chores done. You look away from the app that shows you this for 15min and your phone is ringing to be to work in 90min. It would be more tolerable if the company at least faked caring about you. They don’t. Making investors happy by skinning off as much company cost as they can (even when it directly hurts the customer and labor employees) to squeeze every penny out for its stockholders. Not that the effort to make investors want to invest is a bad thing. But when you repeatedly are kicking your labor and customers in the corn nuts, while having record breaking profits nearly every single quarter for the last 12 years, with annual PROFIT into the billions. Just to be clear. This is after all of the bills are paid. I’ve worn a lot of hats, A few that were very hard labor. This company and its attitude towards its employees is the worst I’ve ever seen. By far. Unless the company does a 180 on its mission, I would not advise give these glutinous swine your time.
