High school popularity. If people like you, you can do anything you want, including publicly criticizing the function of another employee in a separate group. If people don't like you, you can't even defend yourself without people ostracizing you. Many of the employees tend to be herd thinkers. No attempts to find out any facts, just go off the rumor mill. That's what the company wants - hire salesman with no real discernible talent outside of closing the next transaction in a commodity business. I believe the phrase I once "herd" was "this company loves employees with a lot of personal debt - it motivates them to sell."
