Pros

Fairly easy non demanding job, reasonable exposure to a large infrastructure business with recognised projects and clients * Opportunities to work with different teams across engineering, operations and digital/data functions * Some supportive colleagues who were willing to share knowledge and help where they could * Useful experience in stakeholder coordination, reporting, trackers and process improvement

Cons

* I originally joined as a Project Engineer, but the role shifted heavily towards data administration, reporting and coordination work * There was a mismatch between the role title/career development expectations and the day-to-day work being delivered * Workload ownership was not always clearly defined, with individuals often expected to hold processes together which all should be automated * Priorities could be reactive and change quickly, making longer-term development difficult * Process documentation, handover and cover arrangements could have been stronger * For someone looking to develop technically as an engineer, the role could become frustrating when work moved away from engineering/project delivery as I was forced into a path of pointless monotonous activities

Pros

Car scheme, Pension, other benefits ok, but hard to locate on the portal

Cons

Working in the Western Alliance Contract for Balfour Beatty Rail in Swindon and Exeter. The Contract although described as an alliance is very adversarial, with hostility, copying everyone into emails to undermine or belittle, talking badly behind colleagues backs, being the order of the day, and that’s just within the Balfour Beatty Commercial Team; throw into the mix the toxic relationship with Network Rail team in Swindon, who need to justify their jobs in the face of constant reorganisations and redundancy roll-outs, then this this makes for a particularly unpleasant working environment.
