Good employer, but difficult to grow within company

Pros

I would highly recommend BCPL for college students, as the hours are flexible & the pay is decent. Your experience largely depends on what branch or department you work in. My co-workers & managers have been team-players & very supportive. Work is easy enough & is overall one of the better customer service jobs you can have. If you're able to get to be a full-time CA, I highly recommend it if you don't have a college degree & want to get out of retail. If customers are disruptive & rude, you have the power to ask them to stop as the library is suppose to be a safe space for everyone (As oppose to retail where you have to sit back & take the abuse). You're encouraged to apply to different roles within the company, if they become available. Benefits are great if you're full-time & I would recommend BCPL if you're a parent as they offer generous vacation & sick time. Overall, it's a stable job.

Cons

It's extremely difficult to move from part-time to full-time unless you're a librarian. People stick around for literally years for a full-time position to open up & even then there's no guarantee that you'll be hired. The people who are able to grow within the company are the exception (the lucky ones), not the rule. It's practically impossible to go to full-time in administration. I've heard rumors of some people in upper management in can be petty. The director does not seem to be particularly liked among the staff as I've heard she is not easy to communicate with (Specifically that she rarely answers emails but says she's available at any time). I also haven't heard anything good about HR & it's impossible to fire anyone. Pay is stagnant.

Great Part-time Job!

Pros

It was a set schedule so a great part-time job with college with great hours! It was easy enough to do with a school workload but challenging enough that you walk away with new skills and abilities.

Cons

It got tedious over time since it is a lot of the same tasks day in and day out.
