      A fantastic employer - if you can manage to make it full-time

      Pros

      Collaborative environment where all points of view are valued, excellent benefits, safe and positive workplace environment, competent and professional management who are very good at what they do.

      Cons

      Low compensation compared to other systems in the area. Can be very hard to enter salaried employment with the system, even with years of work with the system as hourly staff and with additional degrees preferred for positions.

      Pros

      Customers are usually respectful and kind. Atmosphere is clean, bright and pleasant. Plenty of time off. Ability to adjust work hours if needed.

      Cons

      The BCPL is less like your neighborhood library and more like a giant conglomerate of businesses. Librarians no longer plan children's programming and much of the other programs are an "out of the box" type. Librarians are required to stand at all times while on the reference desk. Independent thinking and creativity on the reference desk is discouraged. It's their way or no way!

      Pros

      I think BCPL is in the storming phase right now, as they got a new director in August after 17 years under the last director. There is a lot of hope and anticipation in the system, and I think we're all excited to get a new start.

      Cons

      The County administration just took over our IT department and our Maintenance department, and this is a major change that hasn't been completely worked out. Things are not running smoothly in those departments yet, but things are improving as time goes on.
