Better Than Retail, but not much better

Pros

You get to help members of the local community. The branch staff tend to be nice and there is usually a positive atmosphere at the branch level, though it depends on the branch.

Cons

Little understanding, consideration, or support from upper management. They created over a dozen new positions in the past 2 years that all make over $100,000 per year. Now they've put a hold on hiring and intend to downsize staff in the branches because they have like 2 million dollars less for payroll with all the new and unnecessary positions they've created. The administrative personnel feel superior to everyone else and do not value or respect staff at the branch level. Branch staff are obviously considered beneath the royalty in admin.

Pros

- great benefits (including an employee health clinic) - leadership backs you up with customers

Cons

- Terrible management - miscommunications and negative energy galore. - Really clique-y and gossipy (staff would frequently gossip negatively about coworkers within earshot of other staff) - No schedule flexibility - DEI seems to be a do as I say, not as I do sort of thing at many branches, while more openly supported at others. It was 3 weeks before a single person asked me my pronouns, despite me wearing a pronoun pin and signing all my emails with the correct pronouns. - Admin office staff are entirely removed from what goes on in branches. - Marketing team has way too much influence over what programs librarians are running. The number of times I heard "We can't do that because Marketing won't like it"? Unnecessary. And with a complete lack of real-time posting or highlighting of individual branch programs.
