Basis Sucks

Pros

Flex hours, good bonuses (low base), some friendly people, decent office.

Cons

This place is a typical adtech company where a small minority adds value while the rest of the company doesn't do anything particularly useful. They recruit by marketing utopia and then not living up to the promises. They have a convincing onboarding process, but after a couple of months, the honeymoon phase ends and you find that Basis is just like most other companies. They promote the company as an exceptional place to work by talking about culture and awards. But the reality is that they are hyper-focused on administering and monitoring surveys to insure that they get good ratings, while ignoring chronic problems. There's really no anonymity in the surveys especially in small groups. If they don't like your answers, you may end up on a black list. There supposed to take feedback constructively, but that's not always the case. Some people play this to their advantage to win favor while others are cautious to not become a target. Like a lot of companies, Basis is not so much a meritocracy, but a tribe. Between leadership, management and hr you don't have the most fair and thoughtful system. Another measure that they use to handle critics is a broad non-disparagement requirement in their severance agreements which precludes employees from saying anything negative about the company. It's not uncommon, but a lot of companies don't have this restriction, and if a company is such a great place to work why would they need to employ this? It's a trump era practice that earlier this year was determined to be unlawful to employee rights, so they should have revised this. It's obvious that Basis is obsessed with its image and its probably largely due to its plans to go IPO. Like most companies, Basis is prone to abuse its power and pull strings for the priority of cashing in. Any investors should do their due diligence, the execution pipeline is subpar to most companies. Things move at a snails pace and the quality is poor. Sure, they may present some grand plans, but when will it ever get done? They should ask for ROI numbers on the Basis platform to see how much was invested over the past 5 years. Basis does make money because of the huge profit margins in the legacy programmatic channel, but the Basis Platform teams have not consistently yielded significant returns with new offerings. There are some in the Basis platform teams that want to mindlessly monetize useless products and features, not to help the company or bring value to clients, but to advance their own individual agendas to get ahead. This has resulted in some useless projects. I left with some standard work experience and vested stock options, but those aren't the main reasons that I joined in the first place. I thought that Basis was a place of progressive people where interesting work was done. There was some of that, but it was more the exception versus the rule. I was excited to join Basis, then disillusioned and ultimately glad to leave.

Thank you for providing your candid feedback. Your review speaks to a poor experience at Basis, and that’s not something we want for anyone. Your insights are valuable in helping us identify areas for improvement and communication alignment. Your concerns regarding our survey process and non-disparagement agreements have been duly noted, and we will continue to assess their effectiveness and necessity. From a product perspective, we believe that we are doing something special here at Basis and building a platform which is unprecedented in its scale, complexity, and ability to revolutionize the way digital media companies operate. This is something that takes years of perseverance and dedication, and as long as the digital media landscape keeps evolving and growing our work will never be done. While we may not have solved for every omni-channel problem that exists, our customers agree that we have created a platform un-rivaled in it’s ability to streamline digital operations. Once again, while we don’t think we’re perfect, we do think that we’re on track to have the most comprehensive media automation platform in the world. Thank you for your contributions and for sharing your perspective. We wish you success in your future endeavors. (Michael Freiman, Chief Technology Officer)
