A Good Place to Work

Pros

Get to travel to places I never would've been if I had to pay the bill. Food per Diem is a definate Pro... I like to eat.

Cons

Leadership opportunities are lacking. Do not get full government per diem on trips; only get reimbursed for what was spent. PTO is slow to accrue.

Pros

Battelle is a large company that heavily recruits from the university pipeline. If you are looking to follow a traditional model for employment and advancement it is a good place to start.

Cons

Leadership is limited by a lack of vision. As a collection of business units (small businesses), it is poorly positioned to compete for contracts. The fully burdened costs required to keep the business profitable as a non-profit corporation prevents the company from being successful in market sectors with tight margins. Battelle depends on clients willing to pay premium prices for services based on their name alone. At the end of the day most services are subcontracted anyway.

Pros

Allows for flexible schedules and doesn't overwork staff; a more "kindly" disposition toward retaining staff in between projects than its competitors; encourages advancement and professional development

Cons

Despite its pride in nonprofit roots, management is focused on the bottom line and is stingier with benefits than it claims; management is also fond of reminding us we won't earn as much here as at competing firms as if that's a reflection of virtue; offices outside Columbus as isolated and the company (in the DC area at least) feels very fragmented and opaque; and overall there's a weird underdog vibe to the company
