Pros

Great benefits and work life balance

Cons

Low base pay, toxic management, leadership by proxy and big silos with exclusionary behavior among colleagues. DSO - organization restructure created a hostile working environment, Leadership only makes decisions based on relationships and not at all on actual qualifications! 90% of the job became toxic office politics. Little to no opportunities to move up or even laterally. The data space is severely lacking expertise in leadership, allowing anyone to do pretty much anything and call it "data engineering" or "data architecture". Zero standards, governance or any data industry standard principles are applied to any work, because leadership has no idea what those are or how their teams would technically execute anything. Severe tack of senior data engineers - actually it is zero! Duplicate work being performed by multiple teams, no code reviews or even any form of review of published work. Mickey mouse "pipelines" built on excel sheets, and datasets created with zero knowledge of "data modeling".

Pros

Some colleagues were good and collaborative

Cons

Appalling and dysfunctional culture in the CropScience - Location 360 engineering team. While a few individual engineers are capable, the team as a whole lacks perspective. Code quality is judged more by aesthetic adherence to obscure idioms than by functionality or resilience in production. There are no design reviews, PRs are accepted without proper and thorough tests. The result is a sluggish team with low standards—until a crisis erupts. This is not a high-tech environment. It's a fear-driven culture with weak leadership and no appreciation for diversity of thought or working style.

Pros

Pre-2024 Layoffs: Great management support, upward mobility, high morale. Tuition reimbursement, good PTO, good benefits. Work flexibility

Cons

Layoffs eviserated the middle managers, everyone on my team but me was laid off. It became clear that subject matter experts were no longer valued or supported within the organization.
