Not Where I'd Want To Work

Pros

The work is relatively steady, although sometimes seasonally erratic. Most employees are full-time with benefits. 40 Hour weeks are common for line workers, 50+ hrs/wk not unusual for middle and upper management.

Cons

The measurements for productivity are strict, as are the goals. Failure is not an option in this culture. Recent changes in attitudes toward workers who are older or have had work-related injuries indicate that the corporate culture is under stress, and is backing away from the former "Bergstrom is like family" atmosphere. The company puts too much into Public Relations, and too little into employee development. In-house training is a joke!

Pros

There are a lot of great people here who are hard, talented, and reliable workers. Benefits are pretty good.

Cons

No minority leadership. Exec team consists of 16 people, all white men with inflated egos. Good ole' boys group. The leaders of this company does not understand how to lead, inspire, anything. They are too important to interact with anyone outside of the exec team. They don't know what is going on below them, and they don't care. It's very easy to see that upper management doesn't care about the culture. Little to no direction from middle managers, but projects still get done because of the hard work of the people under them. Managers are lazy and don't know how to manage. They have their positions for one reason and one reason only, they are yes men. They will throw you under the bus. That is no way to achieve improvement. It probably explains their declining business outlook. The managers never ask any of their engineers how long it takes to get a project done and if the engineer says it's not possible, the manager will throw a fit. They refuse to make decisions, because it is a culture of blame, and they want the blame to rest solely on you. If you want to be insulted by managers in front of everyone in an open-office environment, then this is the perfect company for you. I have never worked in an environment where people are so openly rude and disrespectful to each other. My boss was he most awful manager I have ever had the displeasure of working for. He gives nasty, uninformed, unconstructive feedback, and regularly singles our members of his team to pick on publicly.
