Pros

Everybody gets along very well at best buy. There are a lot of opportunites to grow and gain knowledge on technology. Before I started selling, they sent us to a great training in NYC to make sure that we'd be proficient in what we were doing with our sales. However, as a cashier, they treated us like children. The keyholders were nazis. God forbid if you actually help anybody, you get screamed at for doing so. Talk about terrible customer service. Being out on the floor you get a ton of freedom. Plus if you're in wireless sales there is opportunity for bonus. It can be anywhere from 15%-30% of your monthly pay. Our hours are prety decent because we're a testing department--but who knows what it could change too by next year.

Cons

Being a cashier/csr is probably the worst position in best buy. You get no respect by anyone, management, coworkers, or even your fellow keyholders. The managers are defintely power hungry, as if their positions actually mean something. They're managers of a retail store, not rocket scientists. Any department other than wireless isn't compensated in anyway for good sales. They're pushed to get x amount of sales and dollars and get yelled at if they don't. Why should they care if they're not getting anything for it but a lousy 9.00 per hour!? As with any job there is a lot of drama. Most kids are 17-23 and there is nothing better to do that to talk a bunch of childish crap.

Pros

The company as a whole offers amazing benefits as well as generally good places to work. The discount is good, but that depends on what you're trying to buy. The company has fantastic values focusing on not only the customer, but the employee. They emphasize getting to know the customer and having fun at your job. Every time that I have met with District or Corporate officers within my store, they have been extremely helpful. It's generally easy to get in contact with Best Buy leadership. And when you email someone from Corporate, or call them, they actually take the time to answer your questions and help you find new answers. The company really puts the employee in charge and encourages innovative ideas. When you offer ideas, they are listened to. They also give you great opportunities to build your resume by creating employee resource groups where you can gain insight as well as build a network of people you can trust to give you good insight beyond their meetings.

Cons

As a whole, the company has been fantastic. The downsides really come with whatever store you work in. I am a full time employee, which, to me, means at least 40 hours a week. I am lucky that they give me 32. I guess that depends on the store and how its staffed and how well it's doing, but I do know that Best Buy is only required to give full timers a minimum of 32 hours. As a full time employee, I find that unsatisfactory. Again, a lot of the 'downsides' will depend on what store you work in. My store focuses a lot on numbers, which, as a retailer, isn't bad, except that we do more paperwork to fix that rather than getting customer insight as to what we could do better. But, as a whole, Best Buy doesn't have any major downfalls.

Pros

You build strong friendships with all co-workers and feel a real sense of accomplishment when we work as a team to bring an excellent experience to all of our customers. Even though Best Buy is a large organization, I feel very independent and everyone encourages individuality and bringing our own unique experiences to the table. There are areas to grow and always learn something new about technology and even yourself. There are opportunities all over the store to learn new skills and information regarding product. The pay is above average and my relationship with management has allowed flexible times for me to work when I come home for breaks from school. Best Buy is the ideal place for me.

Cons

Sometimes it does feel that Best Buy takes up a lot of personal time when I am not working, for instance a customer I may have been working with would like to meet with me on a day that I was not scheduled, or someone may have called out and we need a replacement as soon as possible. If you cannot educate or even deal with certain customer issues or complaints, the job may not suit a person as well. Organization and following up with customer concerns is a must, others do not like to have to always fix or adjust careless mistakes from other employees. Management can seem tough at some times, but they really just have to make sure they get their points across and help the store run more efficiently. A huge drawback (like most retail) is the lack of time off around Thanksgiving and Winter holidays.
