Meaningful mission, chaotic change

Pros

BetterUp's coaching creates incredible impact in peoples' daily lives. The leadership is generally caring, supportive, and thoughtful. The talent caliber is very high and I appreciate working with my colleagues. Despite being remote-first, the company invests in regular in-person events and meetings to connect with colleagues. While frequent changes make working here difficult, they are often necessary changes and that gives me confidence that our leaders are unafraid to make difficult decisions for the company. The company's renewed focus in leveraging BetterUp's products with its own people will ultimately improve our organizational outcomes as well as our products.

Cons

There's a lot of change at BetterUp and that's both a feature and a bug. Changes due to shifts in strategy, leadership turnover, and re-orgs mean you really only have a few months to accomplish something. As a result, short-term fixes take priority over long-term investments and it always feels like there is something breaking. From a career perspective, pathing is often unclear due to the constant changes. It's difficult to plan a career when you'll likely move to a new team or new leader in the next 6 months.

The hardest job I’ve ever loved

Pros

BetterUp is, hands down, the most challenging role I’ve ever had — but also the most rewarding. The pace is wild, the expectations are high, and the problems are complex. But I’ve grown more here than anywhere else in my career. I’m constantly learning, being stretched in new ways, and surrounded by some of the smartest, kindest, most driven people I’ve ever worked with. What keeps me energized is the mission — we’re building something that genuinely helps people thrive at work and in life, and the impact of our product is real and meaningful.

Cons

If you’re looking for a 9-to-5 or a predictable day-to-day, this probably won’t be the right environment. It’s not for everyone and the Glassdoor reviews reflect that. Things move fast, priorities shift often, and success here requires adaptability, self-direction, and real discipline.

Pros

I’ve been at BetterUp for over 3 years now, and honestly, it’s the best tech startup I’ve been part of. And my whole career has been in startups. The work is meaningful and mission-driven. You’re not just pushing pixels or chasing vanity metrics...you’re building something that helps people live better lives, and that really motivates me. The culture is one of the most genuine I’ve seen. People here actually care. They care about the mission, about the product, and about each other. Leadership really walks the talk. This isn’t just a values poster on the wall. Also, the work-life balance is shockingly good for a startup. I’ve seen reviews saying otherwise and have no idea what company those people were working at before. This is the first startup I’ve been at where I don’t feel like I need to be online 24/7. People respect boundaries, and weekends are usually chill.

Cons

I think we hired too fast during COVID and brought on a lot of folks who came from bigger, slower orgs—and it showed. Not everyone understood what startup pace means or what high performance looks like. That led to some drag on momentum and the culture. The pace can be intense. It’s not for everyone. But if you’re the kind of person who thrives on building fast and solving hard problems with smart people, you’ll love it here.
