Pros

- Great benefits, perks and on-boarding experience. - I really felt like I was part of something special early on and worked with some really exceptional teammates and cross functional partners - people I still maintain friendships with. - As an employee, you will get access to coaching throughout your employment and even for 2 months after you inevitably leave - one of the most valuable perks in my opinion that will help you navigate challenges described below.

Cons

A cursory glance through the many honeymoon phase 5-star reviews on glassdoor (yes, our entire new-hire cohort was shamelessly requested to submit these) coupled with discussions with newer AE’s and an exceptional interview process created the illusion of a company that had their act together. I was bamboozled. First, if you’ve ever worked at a fast growing, agile and performance-driven startup sales environment, you’ll find that experience at odds here. This organization is run in the traditional command and control style of leadership. No empowerment, no advocacy for change, and no tolerance for dissent. Gas lighting is a common theme as is “victim mindset” labelling. This stands in stark contrast to their values, “practice imagination” and “extreme ownership!”

The pressure to perform in sales is no different here than in any SaaS organization. The difference is in GTM execution and lack of sales leadership experience and support, resulting in a loss of psychological safety and, as some of my ex-colleagues confided, impact to mental health. The overall sense of entitlement and arrogance at the leadership level isn’t going to help their IC's close deals and certainly isn't going to help BetterUp capture a category.

Pros

No company is perfect, and Betterup is not perfect, but its hard to imagine a place that is so deeply connected to making a difference in the world that also provides a platform for someone to grow and flourish their career. There are many places to work in the valley, and I've worked in them. They are usually dominated by EGO, Money or thinly valuable products. This company is committed to building products that changes peoples lives , and the executive team and leaders give everything they have to bring that into the world. This doesn't mean this is a place for everyone ,especially for people that are more focused on getting to a place where this doesn't require commitment to becoming a better you. I've read some of the reviews on this site, and it appears correlated with people that didn't realize that you actually have to work and work to grow into the responsibility, freedom, perks and coaching that this company provides. It's a real meritocracy here , all companies have to go through scaling issues, but where there have been challenges is where the company provides direction , gives coaching, encourages but you actually have to perform as well. To be honest, i feel fortunate that we do, so we actually can do something great here. If you want to do something great, come to betterup, else its probably better that someone go work in a place where it doesn't matter whether you show up or not, and where there are a lot of politics. I'm encouraged by all the top talent that is coming here to work because they are looking for real meaning in their life.

Cons

Scaling issues like many companies at this stage but deeply investing and taking the company to the next level.
