Pros

Amazing co-workers, great mission and business opportunities. We have the option to take a lot of time off but not the ability to actually use it. Base salary is competitive but equity is lacking. I don't think I've ever had a better team to work with. If we were properly staffed and given the ability to do the job we were hired for this would be one of the best day-to-day jobs. That being said, out side of my department is a different story.

Cons

ALEXI & EDDIE. BetterUp has the potential to be an amazing company with great products but the founders can't make the right decision to step down. They make decision without understanding by who and how the work is actually done. We had layoffs and now the people left behind are having to become subject matter experts over nights while no executives were laid off. The layoff is being used as a masked threat to get people to do two jobs for the price of one. A lavish trips is still planned for the 150 person leadership team where there will be lots of book readings and discussions - but no action. Seems tackless after terminating 100 people just 2 weeks before this planned trip. Management meetings are mostly mindset readings or role playing exercises. We are only spoken at but no discussion including us when it comes to the actual business. All hands are painful for most people to get through and is just Alexi throwing a fit and his fanboy firing him up. Women and minorities in the company are wordless, powerless figureheads for the website. CEO vowed BU would never have a D&I Officer. Strange coming from a straight white male that loves to use diversity and inclusion when speaking to media. After terminating an employee Alexi felt the need to publicly make fun of this person's work to the entire company. Very immature all around. I can't imagine if he ever has to answer to shareholders.

Pure chaos, demoralized overworked people, bad tech

Pros

Great idea behind the products and good company vision. Decent benefits and time off (although that's being cut from many people now).

Cons

Very chaotic, unfocused environment. Terrible communication on all levels. A reactive approach to everything. The tech just doesn't do what it's supposed to. Users struggle to navigate the platform and those who work in tech themselves find the platform laughable. Internally, the work is organized in the most inefficient way possible, with a lot of unnecessary manual work. Strategy changes all the time, which results in a lot of wasted work and effort too. Employees on all levels are stressed and unwell - shameful for a well-being focused company!

Pros

-Competitive Pay -You get your own executive coach - Some of the benefits are fantastic, especially Mat/Pat Leave - I’m passionate about coaching, and it was a blast to support clients to provide coaching to their people - The investment in science and analytics is the very best in the industry that I’ve seen - For a person in a phase of life who wants to work hard at a cutting edge company in a high intensity and competitive environment I believe this would be a really great fit -BetterUp will likely continue to have success because providing executive coaching at scale is something companies want and BetterUp is at forefront of this space

Cons

-One gets the sense from BetterUp’s online presence, hiring, and onboarding that this company would be a positive, coaching culture where people are passionate about coaching, who work hard but have decent work life balance. In reality, the internal coaching by managers is poor, and it is a cut throat, money focused, competitive & frenetic culture, with poor work life balance. -Unfortunately, because of the mismatch between what it presents itself to be in hiring and onboarding, and what it is, many people find themselves mismatched to the company.  -The turnover of employees is high. Colleagues have frequently confided in me a constant fear of being fired. Many people are burnt out. People get fed up and leave. Within a year most of my friends from my onboarding class are gone. A third of the people from my first team are gone. Several people from my team that was recently formed have left or put in their notice.  -Stress and internal change is high and comes from the top. While it’s presented as “startup” problems, I think in reality, a lot of the internal stress and change is created by Alexi’s frenetic leadership style. At nearly every all hands meeting during last year, Alexi would directly or indirectly threaten layoffs. The amount of internal change is relentless, and in my view, frequently unnecessary. The pressure is constantly high and that leads to short term thinking. All about this quarter’s results.  - Clients are negatively impacted by the high turnover of account managers. It's not uncommon that a client would have had 3+ account managers in the last 12 months. -Politics are a significant factor in how your career evolves at BetterUp. Working for a tenured member of the clan gives you a major leg up. I’ve seen stellar senior leaders and high performing individual contributors alike let go during my time here. High impact behaviors are weaponized against you when they want you out.
