A mess of a company

Pros

You can meet some good friends working at Overstock. If you're willing to pay the price, the health insurance is not bad.

Cons

Management is a disaster. The customer care department has gone down in flames since they brought in new leaders. They constantly tout "no favoritism" yet took a bunch of outsiders from Washington and placed them in high paying, high ranking management positions. The overall speculation for this move was simply because they are friends with the current CS leader. The positions were not posted to apply for. There was no official introduction as to who these people were, but employees are expected to immediately respect and obey the commands they're given by these strangers they don't know. Managers who had just hit the floor weeks prior were given the task of choosing who to let go, without having any real idea what is actually happening behind the scenes. The reason for lay offs? "Restructuring." Anyone with a brain still at Overstock knows that the lay offs are happening to the people that have their own thought process and will not blindly follow the miserable lead of management. Promotions are given out to those who brown-nose the most, not people that actually deserve it. It's been said that CS is the red-headed step child of the company, and it only becomes more and more clear. The new building was not built to hold the entirety of customer care (even though the CEO made it clear the building was to bring the company together), and there was a period of more than 6 months where agents didn't know where they were going, yet they still were not able to meet everyone's needs in the end. Many times the CEO was supposed to visit CS during the holidays, and never showed. The department recently lost all the paid holidays they previously enjoyed to be "more available" for the customers. Yet, there were no noticeable issues with the previously given holidays. The opportunity to move up and out of CS? Gone. Corporate only wants to hire from outside the company anymore. If you want a career where you'll be lied to and jerked around a lot, this is the place for you!

Pros

Fun and exciting industry Great new building with a fantastic cafeteria New building has better access to public transportation. Individual teams work hard but good talent doesn't stay long

Cons

This organization is male dominated and females are not welcome or valued. The females at the director level and above are not allowed to contribute. The President and his followers are self-serving, incompetent, and often dishonest. Another failure point, no communication. This company runs from the top down and there is rarely any meaningful communication or thought leadership. The organization is fast paced, accomplishing little. Vague strategies and inconsistencies among executives. All are afraid to tell the CEO the truth. With the new President we expected less management by fear. That did not happen, it is fear derived by dishonesty and irrational decisions. Kissing up is a core skill. Everyone spends time faking loyalty to Patrick, instead of paying attention to driving the business. A hard environment.

Pros

The people are great. The culture is very laid back. It's nice to be able to dress casual. The people outside of management are awesome. I have made a lot of friends here.

Cons

Where to start. . . The executive team managed by fear. I have witnessed on multiple occasions the executives drop profane language on employees. The company has cliques and if you are not in that clique you will never move up. If you are on the tech side you will never be promoted. The company claims to promote within but that doesn't happen. The recruiting team is absolutely ridiculous. They have no idea what they are looking for, they are always found wandering the building creating drama and they have no idea what the company needs. When overstock used outside sources to recruit we found much better talent. Awful reputation on the development side which makes it hard to find good talent. This company is losing top talent fast we need a change.
