Bad but not the worst

Pros

- the people - can be shiny as an intro corporate job - some work life balance - basic insurances (health, dental, eye, life) etc. - pto (not unlimited if hourly), paid "holidays", remote, 56 hours of sick time per year

Cons

- the nepotism and favoritism seems rampant (in not just people, but with certain teams in other departments) - Extremely traumatic and bad for mental health. Low morale. The people who have been with BigCommerce for a long time are jaded and numb and unfulfilled, complacent. - lack of proper training and being able to have dedicated time to keep up to date on new things - lack of career growth and lack of communication and attention from direct management - new things that we have little to no notice of and having to deal with consequences - You may work each or most holidays due to "coverage" if holiday is during your normal work shift. Extra unlucky = also, permanent schedules with evening and partial/entire weekends - attendance policy is extremely strict for hourly employees - processes and policies are not fitting of a company post IPO as a lot of processes and policies have not been updated to modernize with not just the times but for the growing and changing situation of the company from startup to IPO and profitability. - doesn't seem like there's any initiative or plan with any short term foresight and everything is a reaction (which Emphasizes how out of touch leadership is and how there is a lack of communication between teams in decisions that impact others)

Pros

I’ve met some amazing people during my time at BigCommerce. There once was a company spirit that has declined so much during the pandemic and after IPO. I appreciate the remote work, coworkers, and believe in the product but the cons are starting to outweigh the pros.

Cons

Since 2020 culture, employee respect, and keeping up with increasing cost of living has plummeted. Internal processes are a literal joke like scotch tape on a house of cards in a hurricane. Internal learning and development is lacking any structure and somehow you are expected to take charge of who, what, when but not during your work hours. eCommerce in general has SO many moving parts, partners, technological advances and it feels like we are expected to know and keep up with an exponential amount of change even outside of our product. Instead of lining the pockets of executives and board members they need to invest more into tools to fully support their employees to do their best at their day to day tasks. So much lives in Google sheets, over here, over there and when you need answers you get the runaround and waste so much quality work time on senseless rabbit holes. Take a peek on Linked In and you will notice many are taking advantage of the ‘great resignation’ to be paid so much more in less chaotic companies.

Pros

Before the pandemic: 1) Opportunity to be across high-impact projects 2) Snacks 3) Some of the people 4) Weekly catered lunches

Cons

Where do I start? First off, the only reason I'm giving this review 2 stars is because I did meet some great people, and my experience at BC opened up my professional doors, and I don't want to seem ungrateful for that. On to the bad: The CEO has hired a number of his close friends to run upper management. Some people, despite how disliked at the company they are, maintain their positions because of their relationship with Brent. This leads to unfair power dynamics and general toxicity. While in my position, I was overworked and underpaid, and repeatedly told that I didn't demonstrate the qualities to get promoted, even though I had the results to prove it and was easily operating at a level beyond my original job scope. It took a couple years of me doing everything short of kicking and screaming to get any sort of monetary bump in pay, which is absolutely ridiculous considering the skyrocketing cost of living in Austin. This wasn't just a "me" issue, as there was a mass exodus as people started to realize their worth. How coincidental that after this mass exodus (if you don't believe me, just do a bit of LinkedIn research), BC all of a sudden found the budget to give the remaining team members much-overdue raises and promotions! On more than one occasion, team members were verbally disrespected or gaslit (one of the worst perpetrators sits on a team that runs rampant with nepotism. This particular individual, who happens to be the CEO's friend, was known to be kind in-person, but cruel and toxic in 1-1 situations/video calls). BigCommerce does a great job of maintaining an illusion of amazing company culture and benefits and its "amazing" product, but truth be told, 1) the benefits are just ok compared to other tech companies 2) the product has its issues and leaves a lot to be desired and 3) there is quite a bit of toxicity bubbling under the surface.
